Nhean is my neighbour. He supports his family of 4 by driving people around Phnom Penh on a Moto, a step through motor cycle, designed to transport two or more people on the back seat. The first time I met Nhean, he was sitting outside his home three steps across the road from where I lived. He smoked a cigarette and dipped green unripe mango in chili, as he watched his and other kids run and scream in play. We shared laughter watching the children, initially on each side of them, eventually together; chili and mango and all included. In reality I don’t speak well enough Khmer to communicate with Nhean, however we are good friends now. He’s plucking a duck here; his daughter helping him. We are both smiling.
