Fun In A Living Hell
I think the English word for this game is ‘truth’. The girls took a board of Styrofoam and poked holes in it with a stick; only a few of them penetrating it. They then closed their eyes and let a thinner stick go into the hole. If the stick went through, it was time for them to reveal their inner most crush to the girl challenging. All this accompanied by giggling and screaming and blushing faces. All of this, where the bottom of the Cambodian society lived. Here outside the capital Phnom Penh at the Stung Menchey dumpsite. I worked with the people there for three months and the resilience of the youth always amazed me. I chose to show you this picture, for the genuine enjoyment of this moment is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I remember looking up and realising that these girls were in the midst of what most people would describe to be fun in a living hell.
