The Bird’s Nest
The Bird’s Nest. That’s what they called the slum area at Tonle Bassac in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In 2006 I lived there, working as a photojournalist, covering various development, personal and non governmental projects.
I had run out of film, when this young man turned up. I was waiting for the camera to finish rewinding when I glanced up to find him looking at me like that. Just like that. He pretty much didn’t move, just posed in a curious position, looking at me, this tall stranger with an old Hexar film camera that sounded like it was, out of date. I fiddled around my bag for a new roll of film and finally found one, hastily I put it into the chamber and closed the lid. It wound on to the first frame and he still stood there.
I took this frame. He then smiled and flew away.
It was after all, the bird’s nest.
